BEACHES

There are hundreds of beaches on Lefkas. On the East coast the majority of them are shingle and there is usually a lot of shade because the trees almost go right to the water’s edge. The Island is famous throughout Greece and Europe for the beaches on the West coast. These are long, wide and very fine shingle or sandy. We have listed some of the beaches which we consider to be the most beautiful and least crowded, if you would like more information please do not hesitate to ask.

East Coast

Poros – Mikros Gialos

The beach of Poros Mikros Gialos is located 30 km south of the capital, nearby the village of Poros and is widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast of the island. Nestled in a natural bay looking out to stunning vistas Mikros Gialos enjoys a privileged position because it is protected from the wind by the high surrounding mountains and ensuring that the sea is almost always calm and peaceful.

The beach consists of white pebbles and sand leading into crystal clear water and is lined by cafes, tavernas and snack bars. Part of the beach is organized and offers facilities such as sunbeds and umbrellas, but leaves ample space for those who wish to use their own equipment.

Nidri Beach – Pefkakia

On the outskirts of Nidri (towards Perigiali) you will find a long beach dotted with restaurants and hotels which leads into the town itself. This is usually excellent for children as it is very shallow for a relatively long way in and does not shelve almost at all. There are water-sports facilities and an array of little restaurants where you may have lunch in the shade whilst watching passing yachts.

Limni Beach

If you head towards Lefkas just before you enter Ligia village you will see a small cove. It is a lovely clean beach but a little treacherous to get into the water as it is stony and can be slippery. There are several restaurants across the road but do be careful when crossing, especially with children, as cars come round the corner at quite high speeds.

Agios Giannis – Gyra

Drive to Lefkas Town and up the causeway as if you are leaving the island. Follow the road around to the Left at the floating bridge. This is the beginning of Gyra Beach, which becomes Agios Giannis Beach after 5Km and continues for a further 2Km. The beach is mostly very fine shingle and in some places sand but the wind does pick up in the afternoon on this side of the island and the sea can get rough quite suddenly, so please take care. The length of the beach is dotted with cafes and restaurants and there is a water-sports (kite surfing mainly) center at the Agios Giannis end.

West Coast

Milos Beach

Milos Beach is probably the most beautiful beach on the island. To get to it you must go to Agios Nikitas. Walk straight down the main street until you reach a Taverna called -surprisingly- Milos, turn Left here and follow the path round the back. You will see steps leading up the hill; follow these until you reach the track. Keep to the Left track passing the ruins of what looks like an old Mill. Keep going all the way down keeping to the Left and walking almost parallel to the beach – you should come down the last and worst bit of the path to the middle of the beach. There are no facilities on this beach so please take some water with you. In the high season small boats operate a taxi service to and from Milos departing from the beach at the end of Agios Nikitas Main Street.

Kalamitsi Beach

The easiest way to get to this beach is to go to Agios Nikitas via Lefkas Town, drive through the village and out the other side. Keep on this road and you will start going up in to the mountains again. Follow the signs for Kalamitsi. On the way to the village you will pass a restaurant – café called Panorama, this is a great place to stop for a drink or some lunch as it has the most beautiful view over Kathisma Beach. Carry on going and you will come in to Kalamitsi village, drive through taking care to keep to the right, you will come to a T – junction, carry on straight and down the hill towards the beach. Towards the bottom the road splits up, whichever one you choose will take you to a small cove. There is a small café down here which we would recommend you stop at – look out for the signs – the beach is quite sandy and you can have lunch or refreshments at the café.

Gialos

Gialos is located on the southwest side of the island. Drive through Nidri and Vassiliki and up the hill towards and through Agios Petros until you arrive at a left turn signposted ‘Komilio-Athani’. Turn left here and carry on until you reach a small disused quarry on the Left-hand side just before you enter Athani village, immediately after this there is a small sign on the right saying ‘Gialos 3km – Kantina’, turn Right here and Right again at the small T – junction further down, follow the steep and windy road all the way to the bottom. It can be quite a scary drive down to the beach and not recommended if you are afraid of heights. The road is partly asphalt, partly cement and very steep and narrow most of the way so please take care. The canteen is not always open especially in early and late season.
